what should be worn
what should be carried

| Over a period, complete the planned journeys. Take turns in leading the group for part of the time |
| Make a report to an audience about at least one of your journeys. Route cards, sketch maps and photographs should be presented where possible |
| Demonstrate how the map and compass was used during the journey |
| Demonstrate an awareness of the need to preserve the natural environment. For example, avoiding erosion, conserving wildlife habitat.

| Demonstrate awareness of developments in technology, such as the Global Positioning System (GPS); digital mapping; waterproof maps etc.

| Show knowledge of the publication Safety on Mountains (British Mountaineering Council).
